I know exactly what you mean!!! I know quite a bit about the game and how it should be played, and I still cannot get into the 80's for 18 holes (I will be the first to admit that I don't know anywhere close to everything about the game!). However, I do know that after just a few seasons, your body developed muscle memory. That means that your body will remember how to hit a shot without much thought from you. I have the same problem, and my father tells me all the time that I think too much. I start to think that I need to do this or that prior to or during the swing, and get so caught up in these thoughts that I can't let my body remember how to swing properly. For example, three years ago, I had played a round after work, and put together for me a decent round of 95. I then went out 2 days later with my daughter after just purchasing her set of clubs. I was more intent on trying to help her play than I was on my own game. I watched her hit each shot, and tried to help her correct some things I had seen, and then would just get over the ball and hit my shot, with very little thought. When we got back to the clubhouse, I totalled up the scores, and she did well for her first time on a full sized course and shot a 62. I then totalled up my own score and found that I had shot a 42. Had I been able to play the full round instead of just 9 holes, I was on a pace to shoot 84 or possibly less. I would suggest that you try to play with someone. Carry on a conversation about anything, and try not to get quite so caught up in all the swing or game thoughts. It will keep you relaxed, and therefore swinging smoother, which in turn will bring your scores down. I know it helps me! |
