Pick Up Golf

Many people when they are beginning to pick up golf spend more time perfecting their golf swing than discovering any other single skill for golf. You should also expect to have this same need, after all a terrible golf swing will result in poor playing skills while a stable and refined swing will make you highly successful.

What's the best way to learn to play golf?

Question: What's the best way to learn to play golf?

(Posted by: Mercenary Karma on 2008-06-26 09:02:12)

I'd like to start playing golf and have never played the game before. Anyone have any good tips on how I should start? Should I visit the driving range first? How long should I practice at the driving range? What brand golf clubs would be good for a beginner like me that's not too expensive?

Get used clubs or an inexpensive starter set from a sporting goods store. The brand is not really that important. It might be helpful to take a golfer with you to make the selection. Then, sign up for a group lesson. Hit the range between lessons to burn the techniques into muscle memory. Golf is very much a "practice makes perfect " type of sport but for all but those with the gift of extraordinary hand/ eye coordination. And even for them, consistency only comes with practice.

I'd suggest getting a decent starter set of clubs or a good used set. Then I'd take some lessons from a good pro in your area. If I had it to do all over again, that's how I'd do it. I'm a self-taught golfer who got into alot of bad habits. Took 3 lessons early this spring and am still trying to get rid of the bad habits.

Hit the driving range.. you cant play the game if you cant hit the ball. get some lessons and practice before you hit the course. you will love it

I'd say sign up for group lessons as they are usually cheaper. you'll be introduced to the game, and get started on developing a repeatable swing. they'll usually have demo clubs there. after that, u can piece together a set. i'd recommend buying used. try globalgolf.com or just buy on of those cheap boxed sets. it will work just fine. you'll soon realize that it matters more about the person holding the clubs, than the clubs themselves.
