Pick Up Golf

Many people when they are beginning to pick up golf spend more time perfecting their golf swing than discovering any other single skill for golf. You should also expect to have this same need, after all a terrible golf swing will result in poor playing skills while a stable and refined swing will make you highly successful.

Getting new golf clubs, need help.?

Question: Getting new golf clubs, need help.?

(Posted by: K_M_S_14 on 2009-07-01 14:52:28)

I am getting new clubs and i am having a problem deciding whether or not to get a driver. I have a driver now but i slice and its pretty frustrating and i rarely use it out on the course because i cant trust it. somebody suggested to not get a driver and just start with a 3 wood. i am about a 12 handicap and try to be pretty serious with my buddies with golf so i want to do the best i possibly can. I just figure why have a driver when i cant trust myself to use it. i can hit a 3 wood about 225 and with about a 10 yard slice so it is playable for sure. just want your opinion on pulling a phil michilson and not putting a driver in my bag. thanks! i guess you dont remember but phil took his driver out of his bag in the 08 US open i beleive it was. It could have been 07 US open but either way he did for the 3rd round i believe

First off Phil has been playing with a Callaway driver for the last 2 years…which incidentally enough coincides nicely with his resurgence on the tour. A lot of golfers feel like they are better off just playing the clubs that they are good with and avoid their problem clubs. This is a very short sighted solution and will prevent you from really ever improving beyond the level you are playing at now. If you don’t play much and just want to avoid the headache of bad shots on the two round you play a year then leave the driver out of your bag. If you play a lot then work on fixing this. However, if you want to be able to be competitive with your friends on the course, then go to a golf emporium that has a range. Tell them you are looking to buy a driver and have a slice. They will tape up a few drivers for you and see how you hit them, and then will get you set up with a club that will limit your slice. Every spring I work out my slice on my driver over the first couple of rounds (and believe me its ugly), but by the third and fourth round I have my drives going 300 yards right down the middle. You’d be better off working on your swing than losing the second most important club in your bag. (1st putter)

You sound like me last year. Take a couple of lessons, and buy a draw driver. The lessons helped me out a lot, and the club took care of the rest. It is so much more enjoyable to be hitting a wedge than a mid iron on your second shot.

I would suggest buying a draw driver I have a Taylormade and it draws a lot more than my old Nike Sasquatch
