The common myth attached to getting a golf degree is that it is meant only for professional golfers or for people considering a golf management career. This is thankfully not true. In fact, getting a degree offers a surprising number of advantages to the regular golfer.

Here are some of them to persuade you to consider getting a golf degree yourself:

The first and most important benefit of a golf degree is the amount of time it saves you to be good at the game. Most people who start out playing golf begin by getting occasional instructions or lessons from their golf clubs. These intermittent lessons will take a very long time to get you to a certain stage in playing if you take them infrequently.A number of people also depend on tips from instructional and fellow players to improve their game. These instructions may not necessarily always be accurate and you will take much longer to correct a technique than you will to learn it correctly in the first place. Pursuing a golf degree will speed up your learning process and make you confident of your game in a short span of time.

The next most important advantage of pursuing a golf degree is money. If you are learning golf by taking golf lessons at a club, you are going to need regular lessons to help get started in golf. These frequent lessons can work out to very expensive over a period of time.Every time you have hit a plateau in the game, you will be required to spend a lot of money on getting ahead. At a golf academy, you can get as far ahead as possible within a fixed budget.

Lastly, the atmosphere at a golfing academy is very conducive to learning. A number of players quit the game because they never get confident of their abilities or lose interest when they find they are not getting any better. The learning atmosphere at a golfing academy will help remove all these mental blocks that come in the way of people learning and enjoying the game of golf.

Playing golf has a number of benefits, health-related and otherwise, and that is probably why we see people from all walks of life and across all ages engage in golf.

If you are considering playing golf yourself, here are a number of great benefits of golf to encourage you to take up the game:

Golfing involves a lot of walking, usually brisk. One is required to walk anything between four and eight miles to play one round of golf. This helps reduce body fat by burning up a lot of calories and also helps keep cholesterol in check. It also helps increase your cardio-vascular capacity and helps regulate proper blood flow in your body. It improves your lung capacity and has a positive impact on your stamina.

The technique required to play golf well also allows you to maintain a high level of fitness. Your muscles and joints grow flexible and supple with regular playing of golf.

If you have the right mental attitude towards the game and are not prone to temper tantrums while playing, a game of golf can work as a very effective stress buster. The enjoyment of playing and the mild physical exertion makes our body secrete endorphins which act as a powerful mood enhancer. You are likely to feel refreshed and energetic after playing a game of golf.

Golf also has a huge positive impact on our mental capabilities. Golf is, after all a strategic game and you are constantly required to gauge the length of your shot, decide the kind of club to use, choose the correct swing for the shot, etc. It keeps you mentally alert and enhances the strategic thinking capability of our mind.

Apart from all the health benefits, golf also offers a range of social advantages. Playing golf allows you to meet other people. Considering that people from all walks of life engage in playing golf, you are likely to find a huge variety of interesting people to socialize with. Regular golf partners are known to share a strong bond between them and a number of lifelong relationships have the potential of beginning on a golf course

Starting to buy golf equipment can be daunting for a beginner. The boom in the golfing equipment industry, the choice of clubs, balls, bags, apparel, etc. is so wide that it is almost impossible to decide what to buy if you don’t already know what you want, and a beginner does not necessarily have this advantage. Here are a few tips to help you buy your first set of golfing equipment.

A player needs a driver, a few fairway woods, irons, wedges and a putter in his golf bag. Ideally, at any point in time, a player should never have more than 14 clubs in their bag. Ideally, start by renting your equipment.

Given the importance on good golfing equipment, you are very likely to find rental golfing equipment that is well maintained and in good shape at a reasonable price. This will give you the feel for all kinds of woods, irons, etc. and you will be better informed when you go to buy your first set.

Also you will be able to tell what kind of equipment suits you better and you can avoid making the mistake of buying expensive gear that is not well suited to you. You may also want to consider buying a used golf set, especially if you are not able to rent a good quality one.

Before buying any golfing equipment, make sure that you first try them out. Most golf shops will have the facility to let you do so and be sure to take advantage of it. If you are buying from a high-end club’s store, you may also be able to request for a demo set to try out on the course.

This is a great advantage to have because you will be familiar with the feel of the clubs in your hand and you can be sure you are comfortable with them before you shell out the money for it.

It is also important to remember that big brand names are not always the best brands for beginners. Also, shop around for your golfing equipment, just as you would for any other product.

Finding the right golf partner is sometimes tougher than finding the right life partner. You want your golf partner to be somebody you are comfortable with. If you are playing with a much better player, or a relation who is beginner, you may find yourself trying to impress your partner and not really enjoying a good game of golf.

Most people entirely avoid playing with people they have social obligations with because they don’t want anything to interfere with their game.

You want your partner to be somebody you can communicate clearly with and are also comfortable being silent with. The game of golf requires silence from the players for the most part and if you cannot be comfortable with your partner in silence, you are likely to have a lousy round.

You also need to have a partner you can trust. If you have to keep looking over your partner’s shoulder to ensure that he is not changing the position of the ball or replacing a lost ball with a new one, you will certainly not be able to enjoy the game. This issue becomes much worse when you are playing for money, even if the amount is small.

Finally, you need a golf partner who has complete control over his temper. If your partner keeps screaming and shouting and throwing his clubs about, you can forget about relaxing and enjoying the game.

The perfect golf partner is an illusion every player desires. While you seek him or her, it is important that you cultivate yourself to be an ideal golf partner as well.

Here are some tips:

Always be ready at tee times. Nobody likes to spend playing time waiting for their partners to show up.

Don’t ever cheat, even if it is for something small. At any level, cheating should not be accepted.

Learn to keep silent during the game. Little small talk between shots may be acceptable, but most players are obsessed with keeping silent and focusing on the game alone.

Control your temper. What you cannot tolerate, others should not be expected to tolerate from you.

Play small stakes initially and be willing to lose a few bucks in your search for a good golf partner.

Golf has always been considered a gentleman’s game and it comes with its own set of etiquettes. Following the etiquette of the game is just as important as following the rules of the game. Here are some tips to familiarize you with golf etiquette.

One of the most basic principles of etiquette revolves around clothing. We have seen golfers obsess over the right choice in apparel, but this has been a part of golfing tradition from the days of yore. Most clubs reinforce this etiquette by requiring players to be dressed in collared shirts and full length pants, but not jeans, and golfing shoes. The more prestigious a golf club is, the more stringent are its rules, and the expectation that you will follow the rules is also higher.

You need to be ready to hit the links at your scheduled tee time. This means that you should have changed into appropriate clothes, bought your golf balls, arranged for a cart, etc. before your tee time. You may even consider playing a few practice shots before the game begins, but if so, ensure you do that before tee time. At tee time, all players are expected to be in readiness to begin the game.

In recent times, most clubs have also banned the use of cell phones on the links. This is a matter of consideration for other players, but it does provide the opportunity of escape from the hustle-bustle of the real world. Players are not allowed to carry their cell phones on the golf links, but if you must carry one in the case of an emergency, it must be switched off until required.

Lastly, here is the most golden rule of etiquette in the game of golf- Silence. More than a rule, it is an obsession among players. The concentration that is required to aim and hit the golf ball with a club, in the right direction, with the right force, requires a lot of concentration, and it is not acceptable that you distract any player by talking.

Whether you are playing golf with friends or stranger, small talk and discussions are best left outside the golf links.

Golf is an interesting game, but it is much analyzed, discussed and talked about in today’s day and age. It can be very confusing for a beginner to decide what aspects of the game are important for him to consider and which are, in fact, trivial. Here are some tips for you to stay focused on learning and enjoying the game of golf.

The pressure to having to buy expensive equipment usually deters people from starting the game, but this is not necessarily the case. Consider renting your first set. You should not have spent a considerable amount on equipment for any game, before you have tried it out and decided on pursuing it.

Once you have decided you pursue the game, you will have the advantage of knowing exactly what equipment you want to buy and how much your budget ought to be, if you have rented equipment the first few times you play the game. You may also consider buying a used set, if renting equipment regularly is a lot of pressure on your wallet.

Secondly, start your golfing by taking lessons from a professional. There is no substitute to learning the game right in the first place. It will take you longer to correct your technique at a later stage than learning it right from the start. There are a number of people who will consider themselves experts just because they have been playing golf longer than you. Unless these are really good golfers whose tips will help you improve your game, avoid taking lessons from anybody who is not a professional.

The most important tip for beginners is to remember that golf is a game and is meant to be enjoyed. If you start with a competitive streak and hope to be winning a tournament within months of starting to play golf, you are likely not to succeed.

Start by enjoying the game, the walks, and the health benefits and allow the game to grow on you. Once you have built a passion for the game, you will invariably be involved in improving your technique, style, equipment, etc. and who knows, you may get good enough to be in a tournament soon enough.

The first record of a game resembling golf being played is from 1297 in the Netherlands in a city of Loenen aan de Vecht. This game has been recorded as being played with sticks and leather balls. The goal of the game was to hit the leather ball into a target which was a few hundred meters away and whoever hit the target in the least number of strokes was the winner.

But, general consensus has it that the game of golf as we understand it today has come down to us from the Scotland. People believe that the game originated from shepherds who tried knocking stones in rabbit holes with their stick, but this view has not been proven with any authority. What we do know is that, in 1457, James II of Scotland banned the game in Scotland because it was interfering with the archery practice of the archers in the Scottish army.

The game at that time was called ‘gowf’. This may be an alteration of the term ‘kolf’ in Dutch which means club, stick or bat. In some opinion, this fact does strengthen the claim that golf was originally played in the Netherlands and brought to Scotland by travelers or tradesmen.

Irrespective of where the game originated, there is no disputing that the modern game of golf, as it is played now, has descended from Scotland. Scotland boasts of the first golf course in the history of the game. In fact, there is also evidence of golf clubs that required membership also originated in Scotland. Scotland is also responsible for having written down the rules of the game.

The 18 course golf course was also first laid out by the Scots. Scotland also gave rise to the tradition of competitions and laid out the structure for the first golf tournament in the world. These tournaments were usually held between players of different cities. It is rumored that Mary, Queen of Scots had played the links in 1567.

Over a period of time, given the relationship between Scotland and England, the game of golf soon spread in England, thereafter spreading to the rest of the world.

Some people claim that golf is not just a game, but a way of life. While this point of view is subjective, it is, however, true that a number of things outside of the game can help you improve your game of golf.

Here is a more holistic approach to improve your game of golf:

It is important to keep both your body fit and in shape.
You are required to walk four to eight miles to play a round of golf, and you need to ensure that you are in shape to do so. Also, a swing involves the use of a number of muscles and joints and it is important for you to keep them supple and flexible. For this you need to have exercise as part of your regular regimen. Being physically fit will ensure that you focus remains on the game and you are not distracted by physical discomfort.

Secondly, golf is, after all, a strategic sport.
You need to judge the shot you take, decide which clubs to use, gauge the force required, etc, apart from keeping track of scores. It will hold you in good stead to keep yourself mentally active and alert and sharpen your strategic thinking skills. You can choose a number of methods to bring about mental alertness- crosswords, puzzles, yoga, meditation, etc. This will certainly improve your golf, but will also impact your whole life.

Take Your Diet Seriously
Avoid foods that make you sluggish and slow. Also avoid a lot of sweet and fatty foods. Also try and avoid nervous system stimulants like coffee, tea or cigarettes. You need to be calm and collected and having adrenalin flowing through your system will also make you hyperactive and restless.

Practice anger control
If you find yourself getting angry at yourself or your game, being able to control your anger will work wonders for improving your game. Whether or not you show your anger, your game does get affected by your state of mind and the angrier you are, the less likely you are to hit the perfect shot.

We have all heard horror stories involving angry golfers. People who are pleasant and sociable in other circumstances begin to rant and rave during the game of golf. They will be perfectly jovial before the game, after the game and as long as their game is going well. The moment they play a bad shot, they start losing their temper and it deteriorates their playing and further aggravates their anger.

It seems surprising that in an atmosphere of such calm, it is possible to get so angry. Most players tend to direct their anger towards their equipment or themselves. Golf being a game where talent and skill are still the most important criteria for winning, some players cannot control their temper when they cannot control their game. They seem to think that a bad shot implies their lack of skills and ability and they try to recover lost ground by player harder, but never succeeding.

So, we can see that temper on the golf course may be inevitable for people with strong personalities, how can we control our anger in the middle of a game. To do so, let us understand how anger works. When our mind perceives a threat- in this case, the threat of looking unskilled or untalented- it reacts by sending adrenalin rushing through our system to counter the threat. This rush of adrenalin also gets us angry to mentally prepare us for dealing with the threat. This is the natural bodily reaction to threat, although it is hardly required in the settings of a golf game.

The important thing is to control the bodily reaction and the mind will follow. This is a little difficult because anger also muddies our ability to think clearly or logically. The only way to get the mind to stop reacting to the perceived threat is to get it to think of something that is not threatening. The best method is to think of and visualize a calming image in your mind for some time and allow your mind to react to it. As the mind responds to the calming mental image, you will find anger drain out of your system and you can return to enjoying the game of golf.
